Asbestos is the leading cause of workplace fatalities in Canada. It's still present in millions of Canadian buildings built before 1990 — floor tiles, ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, drywall joint compound, popcorn ceilings, and countless other materials. While active asbestos abatement work requires specialized certification (Level 1 or Level 2), everyone who works IN or AROUND older buildings should have basic awareness of asbestos hazards.
Gama Safety Canada's Online Asbestos Awareness course is designed for non-abatement workers — people who might encounter asbestos in the course of their work but won't disturb it themselves. Complete on any device at your own pace. Instant digital certificate. Physical wallet card mailed to your address at no extra cost.
Asbestos is a group of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals — chrysotile (most common), amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. Used extensively in Canadian construction from 1900 to 1990 for its fire resistance, insulation properties, and durability. Banned in most applications by the 1990s. When intact and undisturbed, asbestos-containing materials pose no health risk. The danger occurs when they're damaged, disturbed, or crumble ("friable") — releasing microscopic fibres that can be inhaled and lodge in the lungs.
Critically: there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Even brief exposure can lead to disease decades later. This is why the ONLY safe strategy around asbestos is: don't disturb it, and if you must work near it, ensure trained professionals handle it.
