Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 and CSA Standard B354, workers who operate OR supervise any aerial lift equipment must have documented training.

Important: Full Certification Requires Practical Evaluation
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 and CSA B354.8, full aerial lift certification requires a hands-on practical evaluation on a real machine. Online theory alone is not sufficient for most first-time operators seeking full employer certification.

Aerial Lift Types Compared
- Movement: Scissor lifts extend straight up. Boom lifts extend up AND outward.
- Height: Scissor lifts reach 19–50 feet. Boom lifts reach 30–185 feet.
- Reach: Scissor lifts have no horizontal reach. Boom lifts extend 30–75 feet horizontally.
- Platform size: Scissor lifts have larger platforms (multiple workers + materials). Boom lifts have smaller baskets (typically 1–2 workers).
- Terrain: Electric scissor lifts are indoor smooth-floor. Rough terrain scissor lifts and most boom lifts work outdoors.
- Fall protection: Scissor lift guardrails often sufficient. Boom lift operators MUST wear harness.
- Typical use: Scissor lifts for multi-worker platform tasks. Boom lifts for reaching over obstacles.
