What is a confined space?
Under BC OHS Regulation Section 9.1, a confined space is an area that (1) is enclosed or partially enclosed, (2) is not designed or intended for continuous human occupancy, AND (3) has a limited or restricted means of entry or exit. Common examples include storage tanks, silos, manholes, sewers, vaults, ducts, and boilers.
Is confined space training required in BC?
Yes. Under BC OHS Regulation Part 9 (Confined Spaces), employers must ensure every worker involved in confined space operations — including entry workers, attendants, and supervisors — has documented training before starting work. WorkSafeBC enforces this through workplace inspections. Non-compliance can result in significant fines and stop-work orders.
What roles does this course cover?

What are the biggest confined space hazards?
The top hazards: (1) Oxygen deficiency — normal air is 20.9% O₂; below 19.5% is unsafe. (2) Toxic gases — H₂S, CO, methane can kill within minutes. (3) Flammable atmospheres — can ignite from a single spark. (4) Engulfment — grain, sand, or liquids can bury a worker. (5) Physical entrapment — converging surfaces, moving equipment. Most confined space deaths involve multiple hazards occurring simultaneously.
Is a trench a confined space?
In BC, a trench can be classified as a confined space depending on its depth, access restrictions, and hazard potential. Typically trenches 4 feet or deeper with limited access, or trenches where atmospheric hazards exist (natural gas lines, sewer gas), are treated as confined spaces requiring the same permit-entry procedures. Trenching also has its own separate hazards addressed under BC OHS Regulation Part 20 (Excavation).
What is a confined space attendant?
A confined space attendant (also called a "standby person") is a trained worker who remains OUTSIDE the confined space at all times during entry. Their role is to monitor atmospheric readings, maintain continuous communication with entry workers, initiate rescue procedures if needed, and NEVER enter the space to rescue (which would create a second victim). The attendant is often the difference between life and death in a confined space incident.
Do I need in-person practical training too?
For entry worker, attendant, and supervisor roles — this online course provides the theory training required by BC OHS Regulation Part 9. Full confined space RESCUE certification requires additional in-person hands-on training with specialized equipment (SCBA, tripods, retrieval systems). If your role includes rescue duties, contact us for referrals to in-person rescue programs.
Does confined space certification expire?
Yes. Confined space certification is typically valid for 3 years from the date of issue, aligned with WorkSafeBC and CSA Z1006 recertification standards. We send renewal reminders 60 days before expiry.
Do I also need H2S training?
If you work in oil & gas, yes. Hydrogen sulfide is one of the most common toxic gases in confined space work. Most oil & gas employers require both Confined Space and
H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide) certifications for anyone entering upstream, midstream, or downstream confined spaces. Bundle discount available.
