A confined space is an enclosed or partly enclosed area that is not designed for people to work in all the time and has limited ways in and out. Examples include tanks, vessels, silos, pits, manholes, vaults and sewers. Hazards such as low oxygen, toxic or flammable gases and engulfment can build up fast, and many deaths involve people who rushed in to help without the right training or equipment.
This course is for workers who may enter or work near confined spaces, attendants, entry supervisors, and anyone in construction, utilities, municipal works, oil and gas, agriculture, manufacturing or food processing who needs to recognize these hazards.
The course covers what makes a space confined, the roles of the entrant, attendant and supervisor, entry equipment such as gas monitors, ventilation and retrieval gear, the PPE used in confined spaces, and safe work procedures such as hazard assessment, entry permits, isolation, atmospheric testing and rescue planning.
This is awareness training. Before anyone enters a confined space, the employer must also provide training on that specific space, its hazard assessment, entry permit and rescue plan. Rescue teams need separate hands-on training.
The course is 100% online and self-paced. It works on desktop, tablet or phone, and your progress saves automatically. Pass the final exam with 80% or higher to download your certificate right away. A physical wallet card is mailed to you free, and exam retakes are unlimited and free. There is no single national confined space licence. A confined space certificate is proof that you completed training. Many employers ask workers to renew confined space training every 3 years.
