WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is Canada's national system for communicating chemical hazards at work. It is based on the federal Hazardous Products Act and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Workers who may work with or near hazardous products need WHMIS training before they start.
That covers a wide range of jobs: construction and trades, warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, cleaning, hospitality, labs, salons and retail. It is also a common first certificate for newcomers and students looking for work in Canada.
Our course follows six modules: an introduction to WHMIS 2015, hazard groups and classes, hazard communication (supplier and workplace labels and Safety Data Sheets), the WHMIS pictograms, roles and responsibilities, and training and education. Then you take the final exam. The pass mark is 80%, and retakes are free and unlimited.
This course gives you general WHMIS education. Your employer must still train you on the specific products and procedures at your workplace.

Suppliers classify hazardous products and provide labels and Safety Data Sheets. Employers make sure every product is labelled, keep SDSs current and easy to reach, and train workers on the products at their own site. Workers take part in training, follow safe work procedures and report missing labels or SDSs. You also have the right to know about the hazards you work with, the right to take part in health and safety, and the right to refuse unsafe work.
There is no single national expiry date. Employers must review WHMIS training regularly and retrain workers when products or procedures change. Many employers ask for a refresher every 1 to 3 years.
