Under BC OHS Regulation Part 8 (Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment) and CSA Standard Z94.4 (Selection, Use, and Care of Respirators), workers who use tight-fitting respirators must be fit tested every 2 years and trained on respirator use. Respirator failure — from wrong cartridge selection, poor fit, or misuse — can cause immediate acute exposure to asbestos, silica, chemicals, and biological hazards.
Gama Safety Canada's Online Respirator Awareness course covers the theory, science, and procedures behind respirator selection, fit testing, and safe use. Instant certificate. Physical wallet card mailed free.
An actual fit test cannot be completed online. Fit testing requires a competent fit tester using calibrated equipment (Bitrex or saccharin solution for qualitative; PortaCount for quantitative) to verify seal on your specific face. Our online course prepares you for the fit test by teaching the theory, but the physical fit test must be done in person. We can direct you to Gama Safety Canada's on-campus fit testing service if you're in BC.

Respirator Fit Testing ensures that workers’ protective masks form a proper seal to guard against dusts, fumes, gases, and other airborne hazards. The session tests both comfort and functionality of respirators in real working conditions. Employees also receive instruction on proper use, care, and limitations of respiratory protection. Testing and training are required by Canadian regulations for anyone exposed to airborne contaminants.
