A counterbalance forklift — also called a SDCB (Sit-Down Counterbalance) forklift, Class 1 forklift (electric), Class 5 forklift (internal combustion), or simply a standard forklift — is the most common lift truck in Canada. When people say "forklift," this is almost always what they mean: an operator sits in a cab, controls the truck with a steering wheel and pedals, and lifts palletized loads using forks mounted on a vertical mast.
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 16 and CSA Standard B335, workers must complete documented training before operating any counterbalance forklift. Gama Safety Canada's Online SDCB Forklift course delivers CSA B335-aligned theory training covering both electric (Class 1) and internal combustion (Class 4/5) counterbalance forklifts. Complete on any device at your own pace. Instant digital certificate.
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 16 and CSA B335, full counterbalance forklift certification requires a hands-on practical evaluation on a real machine. Online theory alone is not sufficient for most first-time operators seeking full employer certification.
For first-time operators, we recommend our On-Campus SDCB Counterbalance Forklift training in Burnaby for full certification. Or take this online course for theory, then book the practical evaluation separately at a discount.
A counterbalance forklift is designed with a heavy counterweight at the rear that offsets the load carried on the front-mounted forks. This design allows the forklift to lift heavy loads without outrigger legs or a straddle base. The operator sits centrally in the cab with a clear view of the load and controls the machine using a standard automotive-style layout — steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator, and hydraulic control levers for the mast.
Under CSA and ANSI classifications, counterbalance forklifts fall under three classes based on fuel source:
