Online Scissor Lift Theory Training (MEWP / CSA B354)
A scissor lift — also called a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), aerial work platform (AWP), hydraulic scissor lift, or elevating work platform (EWP) — is the most common piece of elevated work equipment on Canadian job sites. Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 and CSA Standard B354, workers who operate OR supervise scissor lift operations must have documented training.

Important: Full Certification Requires Practical Evaluation
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 and CSA B354.8, full scissor lift certification requires a hands-on practical evaluation on a real machine. Online theory alone is not sufficient for most first-time operators seeking full employer certification.

What Is a Scissor Lift?
A scissor lift is a self-propelled mobile elevating work platform where the operator stands on a large platform (or "deck") that raises straight up on crossed hydraulic arms — the "scissor" mechanism that gives it its name. Unlike boom lifts, scissor lifts extend only vertically (no horizontal reach), but offer a much larger working platform, higher weight capacity, and are ideal for jobs where workers need to move materials, tools, or multiple people to elevated heights. Scissor lifts typically reach 19 to 50 feet with platform capacities of 500 to 1,500 lbs.

Scissor Lift vs Boom Lift
Both are MEWPs under CSA B354, but serve different purposes. Scissor lifts only extend straight up; boom lifts extend up AND outward using a jointed or telescoping arm. Scissor lifts reach 19–50 feet with larger platforms; boom lifts 30–185 feet with smaller baskets. Scissor lift operators typically rely on guardrails for fall protection; boom lift operators MUST wear a harness. Do I Need Fall Protection for Scissor Lift Work?
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 11, scissor lift operators are typically protected from falls by the machine's guardrails (as long as they remain inside the platform with the gate closed). A separate fall protection harness is NOT typically required for scissor lift operation — this is a key difference from boom lifts. However, if you'll operate the scissor lift near open edges or in specific configurations, your employer may still require harness use.
