What's the 3 color bear rule?
The 3 color rule is a common way to remember bear response by species: BLACK bear — fight back if attacked (fight to escape). BROWN/grizzly bear — play dead if attacked defensively (curl up, protect neck). WHITE (polar) bear — fight back aggressively (polar bears are the most predatory toward humans). What should I do if I encounter a bear?
Stay calm. Assess whether the bear has seen you. If the bear is unaware, back away slowly and quietly. If aware, stand your ground, make yourself appear large, and speak in a low calm voice. Never run — bears can outrun any human. Ready your bear spray. If the bear is defensive (huffing, ears back), back away slowly. If the bear is predatory (silent stalking, ears forward, following), prepare to fight back if it attacks. Our course teaches detailed response protocols by encounter type and bear species.
When should I play dead vs fight back?
Play dead if a GRIZZLY bear attacks you DEFENSIVELY (protecting cubs, defending food, surprised at close range). Curl into a ball, protect your neck, spread your legs to make it harder to flip you. Fight back if the attack is PREDATORY (bear stalking you as prey — silent, focused, following) or if a BLACK bear attacks (black bears are rarely defensive; most black bear attacks are predatory or defensive but should be fought). Bear species and behaviour matter more than any simple rule.
Is bear spray better than a firearm?
Yes, according to independent studies. Bear spray has a 90%+ effectiveness rate in stopping bear attacks. Firearms fail more often because bear anatomy makes lethal shots difficult under stress, wounded bears often continue attacking, and most workers aren't trained to shoot accurately during a bear encounter. Bear spray also doesn't require kill decisions or firearms licensing. Our course teaches proper bear spray selection, carry, and deployment technique.

Yes. Bear awareness certification is typically valid for 3 years from the date of issue, aligned with WorkSafeBC recertification standards. We send renewal reminders 60 days before expiry.
