A counterbalance forklift — also called a SDCB (Sit-Down Counterbalance) forklift, Class 1 forklift (electric), Class 5 forklift (internal combustion), or simply a standard forklift — is the most common lift truck in Canada. When people say "forklift," this is almost always what they mean: an operator sits in a cab, controls the truck with a steering wheel and pedals, and lifts palletized loads using forks mounted on a vertical mast. Counterbalance forklifts are used in every industry that moves palletized goods — warehouses, distribution centres, manufacturing, construction, lumber yards, and outdoor storage facilities.
Gama Safety Canada's Counterbalance Forklift Training course delivers CSA B335 and WorkSafeBC-aligned certification in one day at our Burnaby campus. Because this is the most versatile and widely-used forklift type, our course covers both electric (Class 1) and internal combustion (Class 4 cushion tire, Class 5 pneumatic tire) counterbalance forklifts — so you're certified for the machine you'll actually operate.
A counterbalance forklift is designed with a heavy counterweight at the rear of the machine that offsets (counterbalances) the weight of the load being carried on the front-mounted forks. This design allows the forklift to lift heavy loads without requiring outrigger legs or a straddle base. The operator sits centrally in the cab with a clear view of the load and controls the machine using a standard automotive-style layout — steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator, and hydraulic control levers for the mast.
Under CSA and ANSI classifications, counterbalance forklifts fall under three classes based on fuel source:
Our course covers all three sub-classes so you're certified regardless of your employer's fuel or configuration preference.
Our certification covers operation of counterbalance forklifts from all major manufacturers used in Canada, including:
