What is a counterbalance forklift?
A counterbalance forklift is a sit-down forklift with a heavy counterweight at the rear that offsets the load carried on the front forks. The operator sits centrally in the cab with a clear view of the load. This is the most common forklift design in Canada — used across warehouses, distribution centres, construction sites, manufacturing plants, and outdoor yards. How long does counterbalance training take?
The full Counterbalance Forklift training course runs one day (approximately 8 hours) at our Burnaby campus. This includes classroom theory, machine familiarization, safety procedures, and hands-on practical evaluation on a real counterbalance forklift. You'll receive your CSA B335-aligned certificate the same day you complete the course.
What class of forklift is a sit-down counterbalance?
Sit-down counterbalance forklifts fall into three CSA/ANSI classes based on fuel type: Class 1 (Electric Motor Rider Trucks — battery powered), Class 4 (Internal Combustion Cushion Tire — for indoor smooth floors), and Class 5 (Internal Combustion Pneumatic Tire — for outdoor and mixed use). Is a counterbalance forklift hard to learn?
Not for most people. Counterbalance forklifts use familiar automotive-style controls — steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator — which makes them intuitive for anyone who's driven a car. The trickier parts are learning the rear-wheel steering physics (the back end swings out when you turn), managing the stability triangle at height, and reading load charts. Most first-time students pass the practical evaluation on their first attempt with our instructor's guidance.
What's the highest paid forklift job in BC?
Certified forklift operators in BC typically earn $20–30 per hour depending on industry and experience. The highest-paying forklift roles are typically in unionized environments (port operations, longshoreman, industrial construction), specialty operations (heavy equipment yards, cold storage, hazmat), and multi-class operators (workers certified on counterbalance, reach truck, order picker, and rough terrain who can operate any machine). Experienced operators in these roles can earn $30–40/hr or more.
Does forklift certification expire?
Yes. Forklift certification is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, in line with WorkSafeBC and CSA B335 recertification standards. We send renewal reminders by email 60 days before expiry so you stay compliant and eligible for job site work.
Do I need prior forklift experience?
No prior forklift experience is required. Our course is designed for first-time operators as well as experienced workers needing certification. We teach machine familiarization, safety fundamentals, and give you hands-on practice on a real counterbalance forklift before the practical evaluation. Confident operators typically complete the course faster; new operators may spend more time in the practical portion.
Does this course cover electric and internal combustion forklifts?
Yes. Our course covers both Class 1 (electric battery-powered) and Class 4/5 (internal combustion — LPG propane, diesel, gasoline) counterbalance forklifts. You'll learn the key differences: battery charging vs LPG cylinder changes, indoor vs outdoor use, cushion vs pneumatic tires. Your certificate covers all three sub-classes.

Yes.
