Do you need a licence to operate a scissor lift in BC?
Yes. Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 (Aerial Devices) and CSA Standard B354.7, employers must ensure any worker operating a scissor lift has documented training and demonstrated competency. WorkSafeBC enforces this through workplace inspections. Non-compliant employers face fines and potential stop-work orders. Every commercial job site and warehouse in BC requires certified operators before any scissor lift can be used.
What is a scissor lift?
A scissor lift is a self-propelled mobile elevating work platform where the operator stands on a large platform that raises straight up on crossed hydraulic arms — the "scissor" mechanism that gives it its name. Scissor lifts typically reach 19 to 50 feet with platform capacities of 500 to 1,500 lbs. They're used in construction, warehousing, painting, HVAC installation, and any job requiring stable elevated work with multiple workers or materials.
What class is a scissor lift?
Scissor lifts are classified as Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) under CSA Standard B354. Unlike forklifts (which use CSA/ANSI Class 1–7 classifications), MEWPs use a different classification system based on group (Group A for vertical-only lifts like scissor lifts, Group B for boom lifts) and type (Type 1, 2, or 3 based on travel and elevation configuration). Scissor lifts are Group A machines under CSA B354.
What's the difference between a scissor lift and a boom lift?
Scissor lifts only extend straight up on hydraulic scissor arms. Boom lifts extend up AND outward using a jointed or telescoping arm. Scissor lifts reach 19–50 feet with larger platforms; boom lifts reach 30–185 feet with smaller baskets. Scissor lift operators can often rely on guardrails for fall protection; boom lift operators MUST wear a full-body harness tied off inside the platform. Different training is required for each type.
How much does scissor lift training cost?
Gama Safety Canada's on-campus Scissor Lift training is $179.95 CAD. This includes classroom instruction, hands-on practical evaluation on a real scissor lift, digital certificate, wall certificate, and a physical wallet card mailed to your address at no extra cost. How long is scissor lift training?
Our on-campus Scissor Lift training course runs approximately half a day (4 hours) at our Burnaby campus. This includes classroom theory, machine familiarization, workplace safety review, and hands-on practical evaluation on a real scissor lift. You'll receive your CSA B354-aligned certificate the same day you complete the course.
Can you do scissor lift training online?
A theory-only portion can be completed online, but CSA B354.8 and WorkSafeBC require a hands-on practical evaluation on a real machine before certification. Employers on BC job sites will typically only accept certificates that include documented practical evaluation. Our on-campus course delivers both theory and practical in half a day at our Burnaby campus for guaranteed employer acceptance.
Does the course cover both electric and rough terrain scissor lifts?
Yes. Our course covers all common scissor lift types including electric slab (indoor use — JLG 1930ES, Genie GS-1930, Skyjack SJIII 3220), rough terrain (outdoor 4WD — JLG 3369RT, Genie GS-3369RT), compact/mini scissor lifts, and hybrid diesel/electric machines. You'll be certified to operate any standard scissor lift on BC job sites, regardless of manufacturer.
Does scissor lift certification expire?
Yes. Scissor lift certification is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, in line with CSA B354.7 and WorkSafeBC recertification standards. We send renewal reminders by email 60 days before expiry so you stay compliant and eligible for job site work.
Do I need fall protection to operate a scissor lift?
Under BC OHS Regulation Part 11, scissor lift operators are protected from falls by the machine's guardrails (assuming they remain inside the platform with the gate closed). A separate fall protection harness is NOT typically required for scissor lift operation — this is a key difference from boom lifts, which do require harnesses. However, if you'll operate the scissor lift near open edges or in specific configurations, your employer may still require harness use. Our course covers when harnesses are required and when guardrails suffice.
Do I need prior operator experience?
No prior scissor lift experience is required. Our course is designed for first-time operators as well as experienced workers needing certification for compliance. We teach machine familiarization, safe operating techniques, tip-over prevention, and give you hands-on practice on a real scissor lift before the practical evaluation.
Is this certification accepted across Canada?
Yes. Our scissor lift certification is CSA B354 and OHS-compliant, recognized by employers across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and other Canadian provinces. Because CSA B354 is the national standard adopted by all provincial OHS regulations, your Gama Safety Canada certificate meets nationwide employer requirements.
