Do you need training to operate a boom lift?
Yes. Under BC OHS Regulation Part 13 (Aerial Devices) and CSA Standard B354.7, employers must ensure any worker operating a boom lift has documented training and demonstrated competency. WorkSafeBC enforces this through workplace inspections. Non-compliant employers face fines and potential stop-work orders. Every commercial job site in BC requires certified operators before any boom lift can be used.
What certification do you need to operate a boom lift in BC?
You need CSA B354-aligned MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) training that covers the specific type of boom lift you'll operate — articulating, telescopic, or truck-mounted. Gama Safety Canada's course meets CSA B354.7 (safe use) and B354.8 (training) standards, WorkSafeBC requirements, and BC OHS Regulation Part 13. Your certificate is recognized by employers across BC, Alberta, and all Canadian provinces.
What's the difference between a boom lift and a scissor lift?
Both are Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), but boom lifts extend up AND outward using a jointed or telescoping arm, while scissor lifts only extend straight up. Boom lifts reach 30–185 feet with 30–75 feet of horizontal outreach; scissor lifts reach 20–50 feet with no horizontal reach. Boom lift operators must wear a fall protection harness; scissor lift guardrails are often sufficient. Different training is required for each — many BC job sites require both certifications.
How long is boom lift training?
Our on-campus Boom Lift training course runs approximately half a day (4 hours) at our Burnaby campus. This includes classroom theory, machine familiarization, integrated fall protection instruction, and hands-on practical evaluation on a real boom lift. You'll receive your CSA B354-aligned certificate the same day you complete the course.
How many days is the boom lift course?
Just one session — approximately 4 hours (half a day). You'll leave the same day with your OHS-compliant certificate and be ready to start work. If you're taking multiple courses, we offer bundle scheduling to complete Boom Lift, Scissor Lift, and Fall Protection in a single day.
How much does boom lift training cost?
Gama Safety Canada's on-campus Boom Lift training is $179.95 CAD. This includes classroom instruction, hands-on practical evaluation on a real boom lift, integrated fall protection instruction, digital certificate, wall certificate, and a physical wallet card mailed to your address at no extra cost. Group discounts and bundle pricing (with Scissor Lift or Fall Protection) available.
Do I need fall protection training separately for boom lift work?
Boom lift operators must wear a full-body harness tied off to a designated anchor inside the platform under BC OHS Regulation Part 11. Our boom lift course covers the basics of this requirement. However, some employers require a full standalone Fall Protection certification. If yours does, we also offer our full on-campus

Does boom lift certification expire?
Yes. Boom lift certification is valid for 3 years from the date of issue, in line with CSA B354.7 and WorkSafeBC recertification standards. We send renewal reminders by email 60 days before expiry so you stay compliant and eligible for job site work.
Does the training cover both articulating and telescopic boom lifts?
Yes. Our course covers all common boom lift types including articulating (JLG 450AJ, Genie Z-series), telescopic/straight (JLG 660SJ, Genie S-series), towable (Genie TZ), and truck-mounted configurations. You'll be certified to operate any standard boom lift on BC job sites, regardless of manufacturer.
Do I need prior operator experience?
No prior boom lift experience is required. Our course is designed for first-time operators as well as experienced workers needing certification for compliance. We teach machine familiarization, safe operating techniques, and give you hands-on practice on a real boom lift before the practical evaluation.
Is this certification accepted across Canada?
Yes. Our boom lift certification is CSA B354 and OHS-compliant, recognized by employers across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and other Canadian provinces. Because CSA B354 is the national standard adopted by all provincial OHS regulations, your Gama Safety Canada certificate meets nationwide employer requirements.
