A reach truck — also called a stand up reach forklift, narrow aisle forklift, reach forklift, or stand-up forklift — is the backbone of modern high-density warehousing. Reach trucks are designed for narrow-aisle operation, allowing warehouses to pack storage racks tighter and stack loads higher than standard forklifts allow. If you work at Amazon, Costco, Loblaws distribution, Save-On-Foods, Canadian Tire DC, or any modern BC warehouse with vertical racking, reach truck certification is required.
Gama Safety Canada's Reach Truck Training course delivers CSA B335 and WorkSafeBC-aligned Class 2 forklift certification in half a day at our Burnaby campus. Because reach trucks combine narrow-aisle navigation with elevated lifting up to 30+ feet, our course covers both — including single-reach and double-reach mast operation on real machines.
A reach truck is a specialized narrow-aisle electric forklift where the operator stands sideways in a compartment while operating the machine. Instead of the entire truck moving forward to place a load in a rack, the mast telescopes forward — allowing operation in aisles as narrow as 8 to 10 feet compared to 12+ feet required by sit-down forklifts. This dramatically increases warehouse storage density.
Under CSA and ANSI classifications, reach trucks fall under Class 2 — Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Trucks. Reach trucks are distinct from:
Popular reach truck brands used in Canadian warehouses include Crown (RM and RD series), Raymond (7500 series), Yale (MR series), Toyota (BT Movigo), Hyster (R series), and Jungheinrich — all covered under our Class 2 operator certification.
This reach truck course is required for anyone who operates or plans to operate Class 2 narrow-aisle reach trucks in a Canadian warehouse. Take this course if you are:
The main differences between a reach truck and a standard sit-down forklift:
Many warehouses use both — reach trucks for high-density rack storage and standard forklifts for receiving/shipping and outdoor yard work. If you want certifications for both, we offer a bundle discount when you take our Reach Truck and SDCB (sit-down counterbalanced) forklift courses together.
