Warehouse safety training teaches workers to spot and control the everyday hazards of warehouses and distribution centres, such as moving equipment, heavy lifting, high racking and loading docks. Most warehouse injuries can be prevented when workers know the hazards and follow safe procedures. This guide covers the main hazards, the rules in plain words, the PPE you need, and how to get a warehouse safety certificate online.

What is warehouse safety?

Warehouses are busy places. Forklifts and pallet jacks share space with people on foot. Loads are stacked high on racking. Trucks back up to loading docks all day, and there is often pressure to move fast. Warehouse safety is the set of rules, habits and training that keeps everyone in that space from getting hurt.

Good warehouse safety is not just about big accidents. It is also about the small things that happen every day: a spill that is not cleaned up, a pallet left in an aisle, a box lifted the wrong way. These are what cause many of the injuries in warehouses, and they are the easiest to prevent.

Warehouse safety training gives workers a shared way of seeing hazards and a shared set of safe procedures. When everyone on the floor follows the same rules, the whole site is safer.

The main warehouse hazards

Common warehouse injuries include slips, trips and falls, back strains from lifting, and being struck by equipment or falling objects. The main hazards fall into a few groups:

Moving equipment

Forklifts, pallet jacks and trucks in shared spaces with pedestrians.

Lifting & storage

Back strains from lifting and falling objects from overloaded or damaged racking.

Slips, trips & falls

Spills, clutter, cords, uneven floors and open loading dock edges.

Other hazards include conveyors with moving parts and pinch points, ladders used to reach high stock, battery charging areas, hazardous products that need WHMIS labels, poor lighting, and cold or heat in some facilities. Fatigue and rushing make every one of these worse.

The rules in plain words

Every province and territory has occupational health and safety (OHS) laws that apply to warehouses. The details differ, but the basic duties are similar:

  • Employers must find and control hazards, provide safe equipment and PPE, train workers, and supervise them.
  • Supervisors must make sure workers follow safe procedures and know the hazards of their job.
  • Workers must follow safe procedures, use their PPE and report hazards and injuries. Workers also have the right to refuse unsafe work.

Warehouse safety training is general training. Your employer must also show you the hazards, traffic routes, emergency exits and procedures at your own site.

Safe warehouse procedures

A few simple procedures prevent most warehouse injuries:

  • Housekeeping: keep aisles and exits clear, clean spills right away, and put away pallets, wrap and tools.
  • Safe lifting: test the load, keep it close, bend your knees, do not twist, and get help or use equipment for heavy or awkward loads.
  • Racking and storage: put heavy items low, never climb racking, stay within load limits and report damaged racking.
  • Loading docks: make sure trailers are secured before entering, watch the dock edge, and keep dock plates in good condition.
  • Pedestrian and vehicle traffic: use marked walkways, make eye contact with equipment operators, and never walk under a raised load.

Working around equipment takes its own habits. Forklift operators have large blind spots, especially when carrying a load or reversing, so never assume they can see you. Stay out of the path of moving equipment and wait for the operator to stop and signal before you walk past. Do not reach into a running conveyor to clear a jam; stop it and follow your site’s lockout rules. Use the right ladder or a rolling platform to reach high stock, never shelves, boxes or forks. And only operate powered equipment, such as a forklift or power walkie, if you have been trained and evaluated on it.

Who needs warehouse safety training?

Anyone who works on a warehouse floor or supervises one. Common jobs include:

Warehouse workersOrder pickersShippers & receiversMaterial handlersRetail stockroom staffDistribution centre staffTemp & agency workersSupervisors

New hires and agency workers often need it before their first shift. Experienced workers take it as a refresher, and supervisors use it to set a common standard for their team.

Note: warehouse safety training covers working safely around equipment. To operate a forklift or other powered lift truck, you need operator training plus a hands-on practical evaluation.

What the online course covers

The Gama Safety Warehouse Safety course takes about two and a half hours and has five modules:

  1. Introduction to Warehouse Safety: the main hazards and the safety duties of employers, supervisors and workers.
  2. Warehouse Injuries and Fatalities: how common warehouse injuries and deaths happen and the habits that prevent them.
  3. Warehouse Procedures: housekeeping, lifting, loading docks, racking, storage and moving around traffic.
  4. Warehouse Equipment: working safely with and around forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors and ladders.
  5. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): safety boots, gloves, high-visibility clothing and how to use them.

Your employer will tell you which PPE your site needs. Safety boots and high-visibility clothing are common in warehouses, with gloves, eye protection and hearing protection for some tasks.

Does warehouse safety training expire?

There is no single national expiry date for a warehouse safety certificate. It depends on your province and employer. Many employers ask for refresher training every 1 to 3 years, and workers should get more training when they change jobs, when new equipment or procedures are added, or after an incident.
