Short answer: In British Columbia, there's no single legal expiry date for fall protection training. WorkSafeBC requires employers to instruct workers in the fall protection system for each area before they work there, so training has to stay current rather than simply "valid". In practice, many employers and job sites ask for a refresher every 3 years, and some ask more often.

What BC law says
Fall protection in BC is covered by Part 11 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. It doesn't give fall protection certificates an expiry date. Instead, it puts duties on the employer:
- Instruction before exposure. Before a worker is allowed into an area where there's a risk of falling, the employer must make sure the worker is instructed in the fall protection system for that area and the procedures to follow (s. 11.2(6)).
- Equipment inspected every shift. Fall protection equipment must be inspected by a qualified person before use on each workshift (s. 11.9).
- A written plan in some situations, such as work at 7.5 m (25 ft) or more without permanent guardrails (s. 11.3).
So a certificate from a course is one piece. Your employer must also make sure you know the specific system, anchors and rescue procedures at each site.
Why "3 years" is so common
Because BC law doesn't set a number, employers, general contractors and safety programs set their own. Three years is a common choice, and it matches other training rules in Canada that use a 3-year cycle:
- Ontario: Working at Heights training for construction workers is valid for 3 years after completing an approved program. After that, workers must complete a refresher to keep it valid for another 3 years.
- Forklifts in BC: WorkSafeBC expects forklift operators to get upgrade training at least every three years.
If you work in BC, the Ontario rule doesn't apply to you. But if you travel for work, check the rules in each province.
When you should retrain sooner
Don't wait for a date on a card. Refresh your fall protection training when:
- You move to a new site or a new type of work (for example, from framing to roofing, or to a boom lift)
- You'll use new equipment: a different harness, self-retracting lifeline, horizontal lifeline or anchor system
- There's been a fall, near miss or rescue on your site
- A supervisor sees you using the equipment incorrectly
- Your employer's safety program or the general contractor's site rules require it
Retraining isn't just paperwork. Harness fit, anchor choice and clearance distances are easy to get wrong, and small mistakes can make a fall arrest system fail.

What your certificate should show
When an employer or site checks your fall protection training, they usually look for:
- Your name and the course name
- The completion date
- The training provider
- Whether the course was theory only (online) or included hands-on practice with equipment
Many sites care about the last point. Online training is a solid base, but some employers want to see practical training too.

Does fall protection certification expire in BC?
There's no legal expiry date in BC. Your employer must keep your training current, and many employers ask for a refresher every 3 years.

It covers the knowledge side well. Many employers also want hands-on practice with harnesses and anchors, and they must give you site-specific instruction.
How much does a fall protection refresher cost?
Our online course is $52.95. The hands-on on-campus course in Burnaby is $224.95.
