How to run a toolbox talk

  1. Pick the topic that matches today's work, and read the sheet beforehand.
  2. Gather the crew where they can hear you. Keep it to about five minutes.
  3. Cover the key points in your own words, then ask the questions on the sheet and listen to the answers.
  4. Note any hazards or ideas the crew raise, and follow them up.
  5. Have everyone sign the sheet and keep it with your site safety records.

A toolbox talk supports, but does not replace, formal training, worker orientation and the procedures for your own worksite. Workers who need certification can take one of our online safety courses.
